Nostalgic For Home

This autobiographical project arose from an inner desire to belong. This series of photographs is a record of rediscovery. Over time I have journeyed back to past dwellings, places I inhabited and locations I remember, hoping to find a sense of who I am and where I belong. Through revisiting my life, I am in turn, documenting its significance. The photographs collectively form the basis of a personal narrative, an investigative journey which hopefully leads me home.

Caged & Twisted

The concept for this work originated from personal emotions, the sense of being confined, trapped and isolated, as if caged by my own body and yet I am not totally alone. I am accompanied by an immense conflict and inner confusion which twists me up inside. The two opposing elements within this sculptural piece represent these emotions and hold connotations which reference the slave trade and similar sentiment.

Lock, Jo

My current work is based on the idea of repetition and how a repeated form is expected to make an image look the same every time. In my work I am trying to disprove this suggestion. I am doing this by changing at least one element of every image I have created, some of these elements, for example, being colour, texture, size and pattern, while still keeping within the limitations of repetition. Some artists whose influence is clearly evident in this work are the French knitting artist Françoise Dupré and pattern based artist Michael Brennan-Wood.

Manley, Charlotte

The purpose of my work is to cling to my memories of childhood. I use my family photographs, baby clothes, shoes and any other items that hold nostalgic value. During the past two years my work has been based on representing the value and memories these items hold. Collecting these items just didn’t create enough of a connection for me to the past. This led me to recreate the items that meant so much to me before, so that they might mean more to me now. The fragility of memories and their tendency to fade has a great influence in the way I work.

Murphy, Emily

My work primarily takes the form of large scale canvases, working within mixed two dimensional media. Incorporating the ‘Street’ style used by the controversial graffiti demographic, and practice of imagery. I prefer to use canvas and mixed media to form textured paintings, using complex stencil designs and spray paint to compose images over a layered surface. I dissect photographs of busy city scenes, to form stencil designs incorporating interesting pattern and surface. I have formed a series of repetitive designs exploring this concept, My artistic interests stem from exploring observations of social construction and city life, capturing movement, pattern and design, found within man-made iconic British street furniture, and images taken from modern infrastructure. The key themes I am interested in are texture, repetition and form, I believe paint is the best medium to achieve my layered designs, and I enjoy the expressive freedom working in this media presents.

Nolan, Hannah

My work stems from a love of drapery and the folds and shadows found within. Part of this comes from an interest in classical paintings and portraits. From this, I am interested in bringing something that is normally in the background and bringing it to the centre of attention. Alongside this there is an equal interest in the canvas or in many cases, an object acting as a canvas. I like to use it as part of the work as a way of extending the frame. This is shown through work extending out from the wall or trailing to the floor. I bring both these interests together in the final work when tension is created and there is almost a battle between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional representation. The canvas and the fabric work both together and against each other to reveal an exploration of the real and the unreal.
